Shamira Caddo

Hello, My name is Shamira Caddo. I am a seed keeper, born and raised on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Eastern Arizona. I am currently 28 years old. I work for an Indigenous-owned nonprofit. Over the years I have acquired ancestral seeds. Since growing them I have come across issues from climate change. One year I had issues with drought, which led me to grow only one variety of my seed collection. Soil health has also been a challenging factor for me. I was only able to purchase 20 lbs. of compost at a time and had a tiny one-gallon spray for water. With the gift, I hope to purchase more compost to build the soil health for my seed garden. I am also looking forward to purchasing bigger water storage containers and possibly a water pump to pump water from the creek. In recent years, my home community has been struggling with water shortages, so purchasing water storages and a pump would help mitigate that situation as a grower. Ashooge (thank you), Shamira Caddo (White Mountain Apache).
