Bernadine LaClaire Little Thunder

My name is Bernadine LaClaire Little Thunder, I am a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. I am the Shelter Manager for the CRST Family Homeless Shelter here on the Cheyenne River Reservation. My program is based on wellness and to provide a safe place for families. I work closely with the Department of Social Service and the Tribal courts and the Four Bands Healing Center, as well as the Indian Child Welfare Program and the Federal Probation Office. I help women who have lost children to the DSS because of addiction and help with getting their child/children back. I also help young people by getting them into the GED programs or to Job Corp. I help with filling out job applications, housing applications and other services. The program is to provide them with tools to help themselves be self-sufficient and eventually move into a home of their own. It is my goal to incorporate our Lakota traditions and customs of raising families and have successfully implemented healthy eating habits by planting and harvesting a garden of vegetables, fruit and herbs.
